St. Luke’s Director of Theatre Arts Jason Peck writes: “The 39 Steps started as a dime store novelette which was then adapted into Alfred Hitchcock's 1930's cinematic spy thriller. While considered Hitchcock's great masterpiece of the time, the film is full of cliched overly dramatic tropes that you cannot help but laugh and snicker at. The adapters of The 39 Steps, the play, mined the script for comedic gold and mocked, lampooned, and satirized not only this Hitchcock film but cinematic melodrama in general."
