St. Luke’s Prove It Expo (PIE) Night

Discover the various experiments St. Luke's 7th grade students tackled and presented to faculty, family, and friends.

St. Luke’s PIE Night is a modern take on the traditional science fair. St. Luke’s Middle School Science Teacher Chris Mantz who helped run the event shared, “PIE stands for ‘Prove It Expo’ and is geared towards our school’s seventh grade science students, who choose a topic and design an experiment to test a hypothesis. Whether their results align or contradict the hypothesis, students are fully engaged and participate in a dynamic learning process. In September, the students were introduced to ideas and topics and then worked on their projects with minimal assistance or editing from their teacher. Students presented their work during PIE Night on November 21.”

St. Luke’s students conducted experiments on a wide range of topics, including cooking with more or fewer ingredients than recommended, physical fitness and anatomy, anatomical changes related to lifestyle and athletics, electromotive force (EMF) readings and warnings, the impact of video games and sports on hand-eye coordination, and plant growth potential.

Mantz added, “During the 90-minute expo, the seventh grade science students were at the ready to answer some difficult questions from members of the St. Luke’s community. The project-based learning activity showcased not just the students’ creative final presentations but also the power of their curiosity and hard work.”
