St. Luke's Arnold Wins South Kent Invitational

Thomas Arnold '22 won his first varsity cross country race at the South Kent Invitational

St. Luke's cross country runner Thomas Arnold ‘22 finished in 1st place at the South Kent Invitational on Saturday, October 14.

In what Head Coach Corliss Spencer described as “the most memorable meet we have ever had” Arnold finished first with a time of 20:12. The very steep course slowed the eighth grader down in terms of his overall time but it was enough for his maiden varsity victory.

Spencer has been thrilled with Arnold’s performances so far: “Thomas is very focused in his race preparation and in team organization. His experience running with Graham Foster in middle school at St. Luke’s as well as all his running outside of the school have all added to his natural ability to read a race and know how to train.”

One of the reasons the race was so memorable was the fact the runners did not only have to compete against each other but also had to compete with the attention of a black bear. Spencer, who described the Bear as ‘huge’, was amazed by its presence on the course but said the race director did a fine job making sure all runners were safe.
