St. Luke's Boys Varsity Tennis: Season Preview

The St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Tennis team is looking forward to the 2017-18 season with the majority of last year’s roster returning to the courts.

Head Coach Stephen Vehslage also returns and is excited to see what this year’s squad can produce: “Our roster is very similar to last year but there has been significant improvement among the players. I think we are even deeper and stronger than last season despite losing Porter Bowman [‘17] and Jose Minuesa [‘17]. I’m looking forward to seeing what this group can achieve.”

The team will be captained by seniors Ryan Manocherian and Mitchell Mount as well as sophomore Jack Truwit. Vehslage is confident the trio will provide great leadership: “The three captains have been great so far and have taken ownership of leading the injury prevention exercises and warm-ups. I expect them to demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout the season, foster a great team spirit and guide the younger members of the team.”

Truwit and Manocherian will occupy the number one and two singles positions again this season but Vehslage expects everyone on the roster to play a significant role: “I expect every member of the team to play their part this year. I am expecting a lot from a number of people. Zach Amendola [‘21] has shown a great deal of improvement over the course of the year and is playing at a completely different level. Danny Mezei [‘21], who played with us last year as an eighth-grader, has shown some significant improvement too. Rutger Zenner [‘20] and Brian Peck [‘19] have both improved and are very strong. We have also added James Adamini [‘20] who is a very nice player and has some beautiful strokes. We have a lot of talent packed into the middle of our lineup.”

Vehslage, who enters his second year at the helm, knows how tough the FAA is but hopes his team will compete well again this term: “The standard of tennis in Fairfield County is very high and we have some of the very best players within our league. Brunswick, Rye, Hopkins, King, and GFA are always tough but I think we are well set up this year.”

St. Luke’s Boys Varsity Tennis opened up its campaign on the road to Brunswick School on Tuesday, April 10 and suffered a 1-6 loss. The team will look to bounce back on Saturday, April 14 when it hosts Hamden Hall at 3:30pm.
