St. Luke's Girls Varsity Squash Downs Masters For First Win

The St. Luke's Girls Varsity Squash team beat The Masters School (NY) 6-1 for its first win of 2018

The St. Luke's Girls Varsity Squash team recorded its first win of 2018 on Tuesday, January 23 with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over The Masters School (NY).

After a very tough run to start the year, including matches against Greenwich Academy, Rye Country Day School and Rye High School, GVS bounced back in style winning all but the number one matchup against the Panthers.

The Storm was playing without its regular number one seed Caroline Pellegrino ‘20 and its number three seed Pamela Jaramillo ‘19, but got off to a perfect start with Amelia Heffern ‘21, Mary Grace Thomas ‘19, Lizzy Adamsen ‘20 and Olivia Schwartz ‘19 all winning 3-0.

Katherine Pellegrino ‘19 had an epic battle playing in the number three slot, eventually winning 11-5 in the fifth, to give St. Luke’s a 5-0 lead. Kendall Boege ‘19 also enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win before captain Caroline Nevin ‘18 was edged out in a tough match as the number one seed.

Head Coach Lucia Mathias was thrilled with the teams performance: “The girls played really well, even though we are banged up, and they all displayed great sportsmanship. We had a rough start to the season but the adversity only brought the girls closer as a team. I am looking forward to seeing them continue to play their best squash in the next few matches.”
