St. Luke's Students Learn About Teaching on an Indian Reservation

Annual talk by Upper School Head Liz Perry helps introduce 8th grade English students to National Book Award–winning novel.

For the fifth year in a row, St. Luke's Head of Upper School Liz Perry met with the school's 8th graders to share her experiences teaching Lakota students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota in the 1990s. This annual talk is part of the introduction to the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

St. Luke's Middle School English teacher Jim Carroll shared, “The students receive important insights from a prominent member of their own community about Native American lives and education. When they see how Ms. Perry is still emotionally impacted by her time working at that Reservation school, their understanding of the issues and struggles that we encounter in the book is deepened, and their empathy for that segment of our society increases.”
