Summer Theatre of New Canaan to Present Legally Blonde the Musical

The lineup for this summer's performances has been announced.

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan will president Broadway hit Legally Blonde the Musical for its main family show this summer along with Cinderella, A Fairy’s Tale, Wizard of Oz and Charlotte’s Web.

Legally Blonde, The Musical is based on the popular film starring actress Reese Witherspoon. This unique musical brought a burst of extreme energy to traditional Broadway fare. It was sponsored by MTV due to its exciting songs and fun cultural appeal. Reviewers were unanimous in their praise; “A MEGA HIT” - the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times acclaimed - “A NON STOP SUGAR RUSH OF A SHOW” and from Variety, “TRADES UP ON THE FILM IN INFECTIOUS COMEDY”.

Legally Blonde is just the prescription for this summer” remarks Melody Meitrott Libonati, the theatre’s artistic director. She adds “After the highly successful run of Hairspray last summer we will keep the energy turned up high and flowing with this exciting musical about female empowerment.” The theatre company auditioned over 700 actors from NYC and CT to assemble a highly talented professional cast. The show begins performances June 24th and runs through August 9th with shows Thursday through Saturday nights at 8pm, and Sunday matinees at 4pm until August 9th.

The theatre for a young audience program features Cinderella, A Fairy’s Tale, a new musical adaptation of the classic Cinderella fairy tale as told by the fairy godmother. “Children are more sophisticated at a younger age and need characters, music and a story line more in tune with today’s culture” explains Melody Meitrott Libonati who also authored the adaptation and co-wrote the lyrics with the composer David Hancock Turner. Appropriate for all ages, this Cinderella is more confidant and prepared to help the Prince to run the kingdom. Cinderella premieres Friday, July 3 and will run in rotation on weekends with the Wizard of OZ and Charlotte’s Web, through August 9th.

Charlotte’s Web, based on the book of the same name written by E.B. White that may be considered one of the greatest books in children’s literature. Charlotte’s Web features a cast of 5 actors who play multiple roles includes puppetry and uses unique custom designed masks by Jeff Semmerling, one of America’s leading mask makers, based in Chicago. Charlotte’s Web opens the TYA series beginning Saturday, June 13th at 10am.

Sunday, June 21st, the Summer Theatre expands their TYA series and presents an all-time favorite children’s show, The Wizard of OZ. This production features an ensemble of 8 actors playing multiple roles and also incorporates fun puppetry created by Norwalk artist and sculpture, Kevin Hanna.

The Summer Theatre is reaching out to its local communities offering a Senior Sunday on June 28th where all tickets to the Legally Blonde matinee are half price to seniors (64+). Also, children can bring their Dads to the Wizard of Oz or Charlotte’s Web for free On Father’s Day, Sunday June 21, Both events are sponsored by Karl Chevrolet of New Canaan CT. The Summer Theatre is partnering with several of New Canaan’s finest restaurants to offer pre-theatre dining specials. Thursday nights will be Girls Night Out (GNO) at Legally Blonde. Women can enjoy special Happy Hour and pre-show dining specials and win door prizes from local boutiques and merchants.

The Summer Theatre of New Canaan presents shows in Waveny Park, New Canaan under an all weather modern open air tent theatre with comfortable seating. A limited number of stage side tables and tables for two are available for booking small parties and dining prior or during the shows. Convenient parking is adjacent to theatre at Dunning Field.
