Town Offering Free Fire Safety Assessments At New Canaan Homes

NEW CANAAN, CT — Fire Marshal Paul Payne is currently accepting appointments to conduct complimentary fire safety assessments at New Canaan homes, town officials announced Wednesday.

According to the town website, this community risk reduction program for residents is part of the New Canaan Fire Department's longstanding and continuous commitment to fire prevention.

Town officials noted fire safety reviews at New Canaan homes include, but are not limited to:

• Escape plans.

• Smoke and carbon monoxide detector locations.

• Placement and use of fire extinguishers.

• Advice on electrical outlets, cords and power strips.

• Information related to mechanical equipment such as heating systems and clothes dryers.

"The fire marshal will check the homes room-by-room from attic to basement, garage, exterior, and outbuildings as well," the website reads.

Reviews take approximately one to two hours and are equally helpful for long-time residents, first-time homeowners, those who have changed residences and families with new additions or elderly residents, according to the town.
