The vehicle had been left unlocked with the key fob inside, according to New Canaan police.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A 2021 Mercedes G-Wagon reported stolen from a New Canaan home Friday afternoon was later found in New York, according to police.

In a news release, Chief of Police Leon Krolikowski said the owner told officers the vehicle was last seen Thursday night parked in the driveway of their Brinkerhoff Avenue home.

The vehicle had been left unlocked with the key fob inside, Krolikowski said. A key fob for a second vehicle owned by the resident was also left inside the stolen Mercedes, Krolikowski said.

The owner was able to access the vehicle's real-time GPS system and tracked it to Scarsdale, N.Y., where local officers were able to locate it. The owner was also able to track the vehicle's key fob to an address in White Plains, N.Y., however officers were unable to find it after searching the property and speaking to residents, Krolikowski said.

"Please remember to always lock your vehicles and take the keys with you," Krolikowski said in a news release. "Secure valuables; never leave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers' licenses and credit cards are stolen."
