What Can We Learn from Karlie Kloss?

How did she get to where she is today? Obviously to be successful takes a certain amount of hard work, grit, and talent. Without those traits, you won’t get very far. But there’s another understanding Karlie has that many people seem to lack: she understands the power of curiosity.

In 2014, Karlie had a couple of weeks off from modeling and instead of traveling to some far-away luxurious resort to drink cocktails with beautiful people, she decided to follow a curiosity that had sparked within her, “Every day, I see technology become more important to both the business and creativity of fashion. I am fascinated by how code has transformed entire industries and powers so much of the technology that we rely on everyday.” So she signed up for a coding bootcamp and started learning the fundamentals of coding, “Being able to write lines of code means that we too can architect and contribute to the innovation and evolution of technology.” Karlie recognized that she didn’t have a solid understanding of the technology that powers so much of the world, and instead of saying to herself, ‘I’m a model and don’t need to know how to code,’ Karlie got up and did something about it. She learned to code, and along the way she discovered that, “Understanding coding is a weapon. It’s like a superpower. It’s better than a superpower. I wish I would have started learning [to code] at 13, but it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can always start learning. Jump into it. Learn. Just try and take one class. Give it one hour. It’s amazing what you can learn in one hour.”

Since learning to code, she’s made it her passion to inspire other girls to follow their curiosities and see if coding is right for them.
