What Teens (And Parents) Need to Know About Vaping

St. Luke's Head of School offers a candid, facts-based talk about vaping.

As more teens across the country are vaping—the practice of inhaling and exhaling vapors through a vaporizer—concerns about the impact on teen health has grown.

Last week, Mark Davis gathered St. Luke's students for a brief presentation of current research. Davis highlighted top concerns including conclusive evidence that vaping is highly addictive, cited in a January 2018 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

Davis threw a wide net in his research and even took the surprising approach of including data from pro-vaping websites. “My goal was to educate our students and encourage them to search for truth on their own,” said Davis. “A finger-wagging lecture would have shut them down. What they need is facts and encouragement to do their own thinking, and take the lead on looking out for themselves and others.”
