Would-be Scammer at a New Canaan Bank on Halloween Gets No Treat for this Trick

A would-be scammer is thwarted in trying to withdraw almost $2,000 from a bank with a driver's license and debit card — both stolen.

Ten minutes before closing time on Friday, Oct. 31, a woman came into Wells Fargo Bank at 152 Main St. to withdraw $1,980 from an account. She had a debit card and driver’s license for identification.

The trick that Halloween afternoon was that the driver’s license and debit card had been stolen from a 49-year-old woman in Avon.

The treat was not forthcoming.

The fraudster had left some information off of a withdrawal slip, and when the bank teller asked her about it, she didn’t provide the correct information. Also, the woman’s signature didn’t match that of the account holder.

The suspect walked out of the bank — leaving the license and debit card behind. Surveillance video showed that she drove off in a small, black, four-door sedan with tinted windows.
