2 New Haven Prisoners Dead, Officer Exposed To Fentanyl: State

NEW HAVEN, CT —Despite life-saving measures, two people held at the New Haven Correctional Center died after they were found unresponsive in a cell Thursday, the Department of Corrections said.

It has an investigation underway into the "untimely death" of the prisoners. Officials said that a corrections officer was making their rounds discovered the two unconscious.

State corrections officials said that "correctional and medical staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, to include CPR and the administration of Narcan."

After emergency responders arrived, one of the men went to Yale New Haven Hospital's St. Raphael campus and there was pronounced dead. The second man died at the jail.

An officer who showed signs of fentanyl exposure received Narcan and is "recovering at the hospital," per a DOC statement.

The names of the two who died won't be released, pending family notification.

An autopsy will be done by the Office of the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Department of Correction Security Division, the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crimes, and the Inspector General’s Office were at the jail as of late Thursday afternoon, officials said.
