37 New Haven Pay Raises Approved Amid 11% Tax Hike

Some of the raises are for more than 10 percent.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Many city residents are upset that 37 non-union city employees were granted raises, in some cases more than 10 percent.

Mayor Toni Harp said that some of the employees haven't had a raise since 2014 including controller Daryl Jones who got a 10.49 percent raise up to $129,000, according to the New Haven Independent. 21 of the 37 employees got 7.5 percent raises.

Raises totaled around $244,000, according to a WTNH investigation.

The Board of Alders leadership vowed to launch an investigation into whether the raises were legal without board approval.

The Board of Alders approved an 11 percent property tax hike in May, which bumped the city's mill rate up to 42.98 mills, according to the New Haven Register.

An online petition was created that urges city leaders to look into spending cuts and more financial transparency.

"These massive tax increases are unsustainable for homeowners, renters, and businesses trying to stay in New Haven," the petition organizers said.
