$838 Million Yale Hospital Project To Bring Hundreds Of Jobs

An $838 million neuroscience center at the Saint Raphael Campus is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Yale-New Haven Hospital announced its plan to add on more than 500,000 square feet to its St. Raphael campus with a new neuroscience research and treatment center.

The project is pegged at $838 million and is expected to bring in more than $8 million in building fees to the City of New Haven, according to Yale-New Haven Health It will also help alleviate a bed shortage at the hospital. It is being billed as the largest project of its kind in state history.

“We firmly believe that this new facility will change the landscape of healthcare and draw patients from throughout the region and nation,” said Marna P. Borgstrom, CEO of Yale New Haven Health and Yale New Haven Hospital. “While this represents a landmark investment in our patients, it was also very important to us that we move this project forward in full partnership with the City of New Haven, the State and the local community.

The new facility will feature 204 inpatient beds and will be built within the existing hospital campus footbring bordered by Sherman Avenue and George Street. The main entrance of the hospital will move from Chapel Street to George Street, A parking garage on Orchard Street will be extended and a new 200-space underground garage will be built to accommodate the greater parking needs.

Hundreds of new jobs will also come to the New Haven area and YNNH agreed to a one-time voluntary bridge payment of $3 million to help the city drive better health outcomes for City workers.

The new project is a sign that Yale New Haven Hospital and the City of New Haven will work hand in hand for many more years to come, Mayor Toni Harp said.

"We embrace the partnership and appreciate the spirit of collaboration Yale New Haven brings to the table with this project and we recognize the exceptional value they provide, both to city residents and the entire region," she said.

Harp also said the project will increase demand for better transportation infrastructure in the New Haven area, especially for Gov. Ned Lamont’s 30-30-30 rail plan that calls for drastically speeding up rail service along the New Haven and Hartford lines. Improvements at Tweed New Haven Airport would also help bring patients and health specialists into the area.

Lamont said Yale-New Haven Health’s commitment to neuroscience research and treatment will help bolster the life sciences in the New York and Boston corridor.

“Yale New Haven Health is the largest private employer in Connecticut and this project signals their focused desire to continue investing in our state,” he said. “We are very fortunate that this type of investment will stretch the boundaries of medicine and likely lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of neurologic disease."

He too also spoke of the need for greater transportation infrastructure in the area.
