NEW HAVEN, CT—The founder of Water Street Jewelers opens her third Connecticut location, 1094 Chapel St., part of the Shops at Yale on April 1. The jewelry shop is already "beloved" in Guilford and Madison.

Daniela Balzano said it's a "move that feels less like expansion and more like evolution."

On a stretch of Chapel Street, where historic architecture blends with a lively cultural scene, Balzano is "writing her next chapter in gold."

"Chapel Street has an energy," Balzano said. "It’s intellectual, artistic, and historic—and yet it’s constantly reinventing itself. That balance feels very aligned with how I design jewelry."

Water Street Jewelers, she said, has become "synonymous with bespoke" engagement rings, heirloom redesigns, and an aesthetic that blends coastal ease with elevated craftsmanship.

Balzano’s boutiques are more than display cases.

"I’ve never believed jewelry should just sit in a drawer," she explained. "It should carry meaning. It should mark a moment. It should tell a story."

12 Years on the Road

Before building her own brand, Balzano spent 12 formative years traveling the country as a manufacturer’s representative for luxury jewelry houses, including Kabana and Sylvie Collection.

Those years shaped her fluency in diamonds, design integrity, and "what discerning clients truly value."

"I was immersed in the bridal world," she said. "I learned proportion, stone selection, and finishing details—but more importantly, I learned how personal this purchase is. An engagement ring isn’t just jewelry. It’s a promise."

The Water Street Aesthetic

The boutiques are known for their "airy elegance—light-filled interiors, warm tones, and a curated sensibility that feels European yet distinctly Connecticut," a news release reads.

The new Chapel Street location carries that signature forward while honoring the historic character of its façade, her news release reads

"I want people to walk in and exhale," she says. "Luxury shouldn’t feel intimidating. It should feel intentional."

Clients work directly with Balzano throughout the design process, from initial sketch to computer-aided drafting (CAD) rendering to final polish.

It’s a level of involvement rare in modern luxury retail, she said.

"There’s something powerful about sitting across from someone and sketching their future heirloom," she shared. "You’re holding their story in your hands."

A Family Chapter Begins

The expansion carries meaning that goes deeper than just the size of the space.

Balzano’s daughter, Luna McCulloch, has joined the business. A new generation introducing fresh perspective to a long-established brand

"This is the part that makes me emotional," Balzano said. "Building something is one thing. Building something your daughter wants to step into—that's legacy."

Luna represents the next evolution of Water Street, her mother said.

"Modern, design-aware, digitally fluent—yet grounded in the craftsmanship and client intimacy" cultivated by Balzano.

"We’re blending experience with new vision," Balzano said. "That’s where magic happens."

More Than a Storefront

Opening on Chapel Street is more than just geographic expansion, she noted. It marks Water Street Jewelers’ rise as one of Connecticut’s most distinctive independent luxury houses—defined by expertise, artistry, and a legacy passed through generations, according to Balzano.

That said, the "heart of the business remains unchanged."

“At the end of the day this isn’t about diamonds," she said. "It’s about people. It’s about celebrating love, resilience, and reinvention. Jewelry just happens to be the medium."

And on Chapel Street in New Haven, "surrounded by history, culture, and style, that medium has found a fitting home."
