After 28 Years Serving the City, Last 10 As Homeless Coordinator, Velma James-George Has Retired

NEW HAVEN, CT—After nearly three decades of dedicated service to the city, Velma George-James has retired.

For the last decade, she's been the "glue" that's held together support services for the unhoused, serving in New Haven's Community Services Administration as its Coordinator for the Homeless.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker celebrated George-James Tuesday.

"New Haven has so many dedicated city employees who serve our residents and our city—and one that truly stands out is Velma George-James.

Velma retired today after 28 years of municipal service, including the last ten years as the city’s coordinator of homelessness services.

Day after day, year after year, Velma has extended compassion and care towards our most vulnerable residents during their darkest times—helping to connect individuals to housing, sustenance, services, and hope.

Thank you, Velma—you've been a gift to our residents and city—and we wish you all the best in your retirement!"
