NEW HAVEN, CT — A man is accused of arson in connection with an apartment fire Thursday night in New Haven, according to police.
Police responded around 10:20 p.m. on April 23 to Liberty Safe Haven at 210 State St. for a fire alarm activation.
Officers determined that the cause of the alarm was a mattress that was set on fire in a fourth-floor apartment, according to police.
Police said the fire caused damage to one unit and water damage from the sprinkler system to several others.
Working with building staff, police said officers quickly determined that the fire was intentionally set by 45-year-old Doel Tirado, who lived in the apartment.
Tirado was arrested and charged with first-degree arson and first-degree reckless endangerment. Police said he also had outstanding arrest warrants for violation of probation and second-degree failure to appear.
He was being held in lieu of bonds totaling $65,000.
