New Haven Man, 63, Guilty In 2019 Murder, Shooting of NHPD Captain: Jury

NEW HAVEN, CT—In a 2019 shooting, a 46-year-old New Haven man was killed, and then-New Haven Police Captain Anthony Duff was wounded.

Monday, a New Haven Superior Court jury found Albert Eaddy, 63, of New Haven, guilty of murder in the death of Troy Clark. And they found him guilty of first-degree assault in the wounding of Duff, according to New Haven Judicial District State’s Attorney John P. Doyle, Jr.

Eaddy was also found guilty of first-degree robbery and felony murder, Doyle said.

On Aug. 12, 2019, just before 9:30 p.m., police learned from a radio transmission from Duff, off duty at the time of the incident, that there was an active shooting near the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Henry Street. There also were four 911 calls reporting the shooting of Clark that Duff was alerted to.

"In his radio transmissions, Captain Duff reported a shooting in progress and requested back-up patrol units be dispatched to the area," Doyle said. "Shortly thereafter, Captain Duff reported that he needed assistance, stating, 'officer down.'"

Cops and first responders found Duff suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Doyle said, and he was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was treated by a trauma team for life-threatening wounds, including gunshot wounds to the left arm, left chest area, and lower abdomen, and survived, Doyle said.

Clark was found on the ground at the edge of the sidewalk along Henry Street, also transported; he was pronounced deceased that night, after suffering gunshot wounds to his torso and extremities.

Eaddy was a convicted felon at the time of the shooting, Doyle said, and was prohibited under state law from possessing a firearm.

The New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office in 2020 utilized an investigative grand jury sought by then-New Haven Judicial District State’s Attorney Patrick J. Griffin to develop the probable cause necessary to secure the arrest warrant for the defendant.

The case was investigated by the New Haven Police Department with Detective Kealyn Nivakoff as the lead detective in a multi-agency investigation.

Eaddy will be sentenced Aug. 31, Doyle said.
