He passed away last Friday.

Kochera, who served with Emergency Company 2, Division 3, was a married father of two children.

New Haven Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin said he was a "key member of the department's paramedic program."

"He was cited multiple times for cardiac arrest saves," Coughlin said. "A member of Hill Station on Howard Avenue, he served the city proudly on Emergency Company 2 and will be deeply missed. FF Kochera had unlimited potential and was taken far too soon."

The Yale New Haven Hospital Center for EMS shared its "sincerest condolences" to the department, firefighters, family, and friends.

"Thomas was renowned as one of the region's premier prehospital care providers and has been credited with numerous cardiac arrest saves," they posted. "He will be deeply missed."

The Fireman's Benevolent Association of New Haven is accepting donations in his memory. All donations will go directly to his wife and children, the association announced.

Here is its message:

In Loving Memory of Thomas Kochera

"It is with profound sadness that we remember Firefighter Thomas “TJ” Kochera, whose life was cut tragically short at the age of 35. Thomas proudly served with Emergency Company 2, Division 3, dedicating himself to protecting his community with courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment. His sudden passing leaves a tremendous void in the hearts of his fellow firefighters, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Beyond his service, Thomas was a devoted husband and loving father to two young daughters. His family was the center of his world, and his love for them was evident in everything he did. While words cannot ease the pain of this loss, we stand together in honoring his memory and supporting those he cherished most.

As we reflect on Thomas’s life, we remember a man who answered the call to help others without hesitation. His legacy of compassion, strength, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, daughters, family, and fellow firefighters during this difficult time. May he rest in peace, and may his memory forever remain in our hearts."
