In an update, police said late Monday night that officers, who responded to the Fort Hale Gardens apartment complex on Woodward Avenue, quickly learned that two people who'd been shot were taken in a private vehicle to Yale New Haven Hospital.

Police said one man, 24, from Waterbury was shot but suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They said a second man, a 21-year-old from Ansonia, was also in the vehicle, and he would later die from his gunshot wounds.

"A short time later," police said that another gunshot victim was also driven in a private car from the shooting scene and "was dropped off at Smilow Cancer Hospital." An 18-year-old from New Haven, he too died from his injuries, police said.

Investigators found ballistic evidence on Woodward Avenue, police said, adding that "based on the initial investigation, it appears that there were two separate groups of men involved who knew each other and the shootings were not a random act."

Police will identify the victims once family members have been properly notified.
