Some Of Regional Water Authority's 430K Customers Have Discolored Water: Here's What's Happening

NEW HAVEN, CT — As reposted by local fire departments, the water authority acknowledges that many customers are seeing discolored water.

The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority provides tap water to 15 municipalities in the Greater New Haven region, serving approximately 430,000 residents.

• Cheshire
• Derby
• East Haven
• Hamden
• Milford
• New Haven
• North Branford
• North Haven
• Orange
• Seymour
• West Haven
• Woodbridge

Here's what's going on, from the RWA:

"As a result of the extreme heat and increased water demands, some consumers may experience temporarily discolored water. Discoloration of water may occur when the naturally occurring minerals that normally settle to the bottom of a water main are stirred up due to a change in water flow. Discolored water is usually not harmful, but it is unappealing and can cause residue or stains. We recommend that customers wait until the discoloration clears before drinking the water, and also postpone doing dishes and laundry to avoid residue or stains. Discolored water is temporary, and most discolored water events clear on their own. We will also have crews in the field all weekend to help clear-up discolored water issues. To keep consumers informed, the RWA will post an alert message on the homepage of our website and our social media accounts, and will put an upfront message on our phone system."
