NEW HAVEN, CT — New York City court records show that Ari Shtein, 18, a Yale University undergraduate as reported by, among myriad other outlets, the Yale Daily News, was arrested and charged with first-degree sexual assault, among numerous other sexual assault charges, as well as four counts of endangering a child.
The case is related to the alleged sexual assault of a woman on the subway, traveling with her four young children on June 28.
Reporting by the NY Daily News includes explicit details of the alleged sexual assault.
The woman got off the R train at the 28th street stop and was taken to the hospital and the assault reported to police. NYPD CrimeStoppers posted an image of Shtein on "X."
"WANTED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE: On Sunday, June 28, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM, a 30-year-old female victim was aboard a northbound “R” train approaching the West 28 Street & Broadway subway station when an unidentified individual sexually abused her. The victim exited the train and was transported by EMS to a local area hospital for treatment."
Shtein was arrested on Wednesday by NYPD detectives from 5th precinct, which serves Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Bowery.
Shtein was also charged with third-degree aggravated sexual assault, third-degree sexual abuse, and forcible touching on a train or bus, court records show.
Arraigned the same day, Shtein pleaded not guilty and a judge ordered he be freed ROR (on his own recognizance).
Shtein is due back in court Aug. 26, records show.
A call to his attorney, Priya Chaudhry, has not yet been returned.
