Large-Scale Search and Rescue Underway For New Haven Boy, 15, Who Jumped Into West River Overnight: NHFD

NEW HAVEN, CT — New Haven Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin said the call came in just before 4:30 a.m.

A 15-year-old boy had jumped off a bridge into the West River near Orange Street and the Columbus Avenue/Boston Post Road and Ella T. Grasso area.

Coughlin said that a family member of the teen jumped in after him in an attempt to rescue the boy. New Haven Fire Service first-responders rescued that person, who was unharmed, from the water.

A West Haven Police Department officer "did witness the conscious teen" pass under the bridge at Orange Street just at the West Haven border, Coughlin said.

Currently, the search and rescue effort includes three NHFD boats, two drones, a West Haven fireboat, a U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound boat, an en-route USCG helicopter, and the Milford Police dive team, Coughlin said.
