NEW HAVEN, CT — A brazen 3 a.m. burglary last Thursday at a longtime downtown business has police asking the community for help in identifying the person they say broke into College Street Cycles and made off with some $8,000 worth of bikes.
In a post on social media, the New Haven Police Department said the "unidentified individual" broke the front window of College Street Cycles just before 3 a.m. Aug. 6.
Police said that person, seen pictured in a surveillance camera still image, "stole several bicycles worth a total of approximately $8000."
In a post to Facebook just a few hours after the break-in, the cycle shop described the high-end Cannondales that were stolen.
According to its history on its website, 252 College St. has housed a bike shop since at least 1994, originally as Baybrook Bicycles' New Haven location. Bob Jacobson began working there in 1995 and became manager before purchasing the business in 2004. He renamed it College Street Cycles, which officially opened on Oct. 1, 2004.
Police said that callers may remain anonymous or submit tips anonymously by calling 911 or the New Haven police detective division at 203–946–6304. Anonymous tips can be sent through the tip line at 1–866-888-8477 or via email to ECIC@newhavenct.gov
