"Leaving hours-old puppies in a basket by a dumpster is not only cruel—it is illegal," the shelter noted. "There are always better options, and we are here to help."

The five remaining puppies are in the care of a "dedicated rescue partner," the shelter noted and thanked the organization.

As of its 9 p.m. Facebook post, four pups were "stable, but one is fighting for their life and is not doing well."

The shelter seeks the community's help to find the person or persons "responsible for leaving these defenseless neonates outside to perish."

"If you live in the Lexington Ave area, have surveillance footage, or know anything about this incident, please reach out to us immediately," the shelter shared. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
