NEW HAVEN, CT — A 49-year-old New Haven man has been charged with murder in the daytime fatal stabbing of Michael Spencer, 37, of New Haven, across the street from the New Haven Free Public Library on Aug. 12.
It was just before 3 p.m. when cops were called to the area of Temple and Elm streets downtown for a report of two men fighting outside the library. When officers got there they found Spencer with multiple stab wounds on the street corner next to a CT Transit bus.
Taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Spencer died from his injuries.
The fight between Spencer and Carlos Marrero began inside the library, police said, and after being kicked out by library security, resumed the fight in the street, leading to "Marrero stabbing Spencer several times," police said.
The case was assigned to Detective Freddy Salmeron, of the Major Crimes Unit, working under the supervision of Sergeant Jonathan Pleckaitus. He was able to develop probable cause to arrest Marrero for the homicide.
Marrero was taken into custody on Aug. 18 on an unrelated warrant for failing to appear in court on weapons charges and is currently incarcerated.
The arrest warrant is for murder and carrying a dangerous weapon.
The bond has been set at $1,500,000.
