NEW HAVEN, CT — Police said Garnet Beckford, 21, of New Haven, died as a result of injuries sustained in a Thursday night shooting.
"Update to the double shooting: Garnet Beckford (DOB 2/24/05) of New Haven, has succumbed to his injuries and is now a homicide victim," police said in a weekend update.
The shooting occurred Thursday night in the area of Mead Street and Judson Avenue.
Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls of a male shot in the backyard of an address on Judson Avenue, police said.
When officers arrived, they found a 21-year-old male victim, Beckford, lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound, police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart previously said.
The man was transported via ambulance to the main campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital, where his injuries were determined to be critical and life-threatening, Bruckhart said.
"Within a few minutes of the initial call," a walk-in gunshot victim arrived at the York Street campus emergency department.
That victim, a 24-year-old from East Haven, was determined to have non-life-threatening injuries stemming from the same incident, police said.
"The initial investigation indicates that this was not a random event, and investigators are working to establish a connection between the people involved," Bruckhart said.
