Lighthouse Point Park reopens to the public after closing from storm damage (wtnh.com) — Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven has reopened to the public after August's severe storm damage forced weeks of cleanup and canceled dozens of events, including several weddings. City crews cleared fallen trees and debris, and officials now plan community conversations about restoring the historic carousel building and possibly reimagining parts of the park to better withstand future storms.
2. New Haven police make arrest in kidnapping case (wfsb.com) — New Haven police safely resolved a tense child abduction involving a 5-year-old boy taken from a city bus stop, after hours of crisis negotiation and a statewide Amber Alert. Officers later arrested the suspect at a Branford hotel, and New Haven's police chief praised the work that protected the child and removed a wanted fugitive from the community.
3. Jury finds New Haven man guilty of murdering John Williams in Hamden nearly 4 years ago (fox61.com) — A New Haven man has been convicted of murdering Hamden resident John Williams, in a case tried at New Haven Superior Court with sentencing set for Nov. 13. Investigators from Hamden and New Haven police, state agencies, and the FBI's New Haven office built the case, which centered on a 2022 ambush shooting outside the victim's grandmother's home.
4. When employer-provided housing is taxable to workers (abqjournal.com subscription) — A New Haven childcare nonprofit, Friends Center for Children, is buying and receiving specially designed homes to house some of its teachers rent-free, responding to average local rents around $1,600 a month. A tax expert uses this New Haven program to explain when employer-provided housing is considered taxable, concluding that these generous benefits likely count as taxable income despite easing workers' housing burdens.
5. Fontana Brings New Haven Lessons To Hamden (patch.com) — Economic development chief Steve Fontana is using lessons from New Haven's downtown revival to shape Hamden's future, with an eye toward denser, walkable, mixed-use centers similar to New Haven's. He highlights transit-oriented growth, trail improvements, and public art, drawing directly on his years working for New Haven and stressing stronger town-gown partnerships like Yale's role in the city.
