NEW HAVEN, CT — A Yale University employee was shot early Tuesday morning during an apparent carjacking attempt, according to a university alert and police.
The shooting happened around 4 a.m. in the area of Canner Street and St. Ronan Street.
The male victim was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital's emergency room for treatment, according to the university.
New Haven police said the victim is a 30-year-old man from East Haven, and his condition was stable as of Tuesday morning.
"It is believed that the suspect attempted to rob the victim, a Yale employee, of his vehicle," the university alert states.
In a 10 a.m. statement Tuesday, New Haven police said the victim reported someone had tried to steal his car and he was shot in the process.
"The initial investigation indicates that the victim arrived to work in his vehicle and was approached by a masked black male in all black with white stripes on the sleeves of his shirt who demanded the keys to the vehicle," police said. "A struggle ensued during which the victim was shot."
According to the university, the shooter was wearing a black ski mask.
The New Haven Police Department is handling the investigation, which is ongoing.
Witnesses, or anyone with information valuable to investigators, are asked to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or the department's anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
