NEW HAVEN, CT — A late Southern Connecticut State University professor's passion for the arts will be honored through a new fund aimed at helping students attend plays and performances.

Michael Shea, a long-time English professor, died Oct. 24 due to injuries he sustained Oct. 9, when he was struck by an e-bike while crossing Whalley Avenue in a marked crosswalk.

His family has established the "Let's See a Play: Mike Shea Student Performance Fund" in his honor, according to Interim SCSU President Sandy Bulmer.

"The fund will support student attendance at theater and performing arts events, reflecting Mike's lifelong passion for the arts and his commitment to enriching students' educational experiences," Bulmer said, in a message to the SCSU community.

Shea joined SCSU in 1985 and taught for more than four decades. According to Bulmer, he was passionate about Shakespeare, Renaissance literature, film, and writing.

"Known for his creative approach to teaching, one of his best-remembered courses was 'Shakespeare Alive,' a summer offering that paired close reading with performances by professional actors," Bulmer said,

Shea had also been active in the local community and served on the board of Elm Shakespeare Company.

A celebration of life, hosted by the English Department, is planned for Nov. 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. at SCSU's Adanti Student Center Ballroom. The event is open to anyone who knew Shea and cared for him.

New Haven police are continuing their search for the operator of the e-bike who fled the scene after the accident.
