New Haven residents can give or collect winter accessories at the Massaro Memorial Mitten Tree, returning to Ives Main Library in November. According to the New Haven Free Public Library, the tree will stand in the front rotunda through the end of February 2027.
The library accepts new or unused gloves, mittens, scarves, hats, beanies, neck gaiters and ski masks, including handmade items. Accessories for all ages, genders and sizes are welcome. Donors can place items directly on the tree whenever the library is open, and anyone needing accessories can take what they need.
Introduced last year, the tree honors late library colleague Laurie Massaro, who worked at the front circulation desk. The library also offers fiber arts programs, including the monthly Stitch Niche meetup in Ives Squared. Participants are welcome to contribute completed projects to the tree.
The library cannot accept outerwear because of limited space and directs people with coats to donate to contact local shelters or parishes. Questions not covered in the announcement can be directed to the Ives Squared Switchboard at 203-946-8130, ext. 140.
