NEW HAVEN, CT — It was just before 5 p.m. Monday when police were called to Orange Street between Elm and Court streets for the report of a pedestrian struck by a car.
Officers found the pedestrian, a 67-year-old woman, lying in the roadway "suffering from apparent injuries," New Haven police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart said.
The driver of the car that hit her stayed on the scene, Bruckhart said, adding the person "cooperated with officers."
"The initial investigation indicates that the pedestrian attempted to cross Orange Street outside of a marked crosswalk," Bruckhart said, and "As she entered the roadway, she was struck by the vehicle, which was traveling south."
She was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where her injuries are considered life-threatening, Bruckhart said.
The police Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene, and while investigating, the street was closed for several hours.
Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have valuable information to investigators to call detectives at 203–946–6304 or through the department's anonymous tip line at 866-888-8477.
