Armed Man Near Nightclub Indicted: U.S. Attorney

A city man is facing a federal charge for possession of a gun after he was found armed outside of a nightclub, according to an indictment.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A federal grand jury indicted a city man on a gun charge. Mariano Irizarry, 35, was indicted on one count of possession of a firearm a by a convicted felon. He has pleaded not guilty.

Police began investigating after getting a report of a man in front of a Hamilton Street nightclub with a gun New Year's Day. Eventually Irizarry surrendered to police after putting his Block pistol under the steer wheel, according to the indictment.

The firearm was reported stolen during a March 2015 burglary. Irizarry has a felony conviction for illegal sexual contact with a minor that dates back to 2000 and felony drug convictions.

He faces up to 10 years in prison on the new charge if convicted.
