Arson Arrest Made in New Haven

A resident of the building became a suspect after an investigation, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A city man was arrested for arson after two fires in two days at a Greenwich Avenue house, police said.

Firefighters arrived to 330 Greenwich Ave. April 14 to battle a house fire. The day before they fought a garage fire at the same address.

Officer Allen Burr arrived first on scene and made sure residents were out of harm's way and began interviewing people, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Resident Jose Torrees said he'd returned home from running an errand and saw smoke coming from the rear of the apartment house. He ran inside, got his wife and alerted neighbors.

Arson investigators from New Haven Fire Department, Connecticut State Police and New Haven Police arrived. Torrees became a suspect and was handcuffed, Hartman said. He was taken to Yale New-Haven Hospital for a mental evaluation.

An arrest warrant was obtained May 2 and Torres was picked up later that evening. He was charged with arson and reckless endangerment, both in the first degree.
