City Gallery

With work that is multifaceted in both theme and construction, Woodbridge artist Amy Arledge returns to City Gallery in ECLECTIC, an exhibit of encaustic and assemblage works. The show will be on view from May 1 - May 31, with an Opening Reception on Saturday, May 2 at 2-4 p.m.
“Nature is an endless source of fascination and inspiration for me,” says Arledge. “It is a common thread in all of my work, whether through actual depiction or in abstract shapes and colors.”
Arledge’s primary medium is encaustic — a combination of purified beeswax and damar, a tree resin that adds durability to the beeswax. The word encaustic is derived from the Greek enkaustikos which means to burn in. Encaustic was used in Ancient Greece and Egypt both as an artistic medium and a building tool. “I’ve painted with encaustic for several years depicting landscapes, seascapes and the non-objective,” explains Arledge.
Her assemblages originate from found objects, often wood, which resemble something in addition to what they actually are. She adds color, additional items, and sometimes wax to accentuate what she sees and give them personalities. 
Arledge’s work has been included in numerous solo and group shows including Artspace (New Haven), ARTview (Washington, D.C), City Lights Gallery (Bridgeport), Creative Arts Workshop (New Haven), John Slade Ely House (New Haven), Kobalt Gallery (Provincetown, MA), Lemon Street Gallery (Kenosha, WI), New Haven Paint and Clay ClubAnnual Juried Exhibition), Periodic Table of Elements Printmaking Project (Concord, MA), River Street Gallery, New Haven CT), Slater Museum (Norwich), The Institute Library (New Haven), Whitney Center Art Gallery (Hamden), and Yale Medical Library (New Haven). Orchestra New England (ONE) celebrates the nation’s semiquincentennial year with a “USA250” concert featuring two new works by American composers and one of the country’s most cherished masterpieces, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. The concert is held at Battell Chapel (400 Elm St.), located at the corner of Elm and College Streets, on Yale’s Old Campus. 
Composer Jan Swafford (also known for his masterful biographies Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Ives) has written for ONE a work for strings: The River. Composer Neely Bruce of Wesleyan University has offered to us for premiere his Concerto for Violin.
The violin soloist will be ONE’s own Gary Capozziello who teaches at the Hartt School of Music, Promisek Bach+ workshops, and the Hotchkiss School, and is additionally the assistant concertmaster of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.
When Appalachian Spring premiered in 1944, New York Times critic John Martin wrote, "Aaron Copland has written a score of fresh and singing beauty. It is, on its surface, a piece of early Americana, but in reality, it is a celebration of the human spirit." ONE has performed this masterwork in the past, most notably when Copland himself —collaborating with ONE’s Founder and Music Director, James Sinclair — conducted ONE at Yale University in 1977.
ONE’s tradition of a celebratory, post-concert, catered reception takes place just across Elm Street in Yale’s &nbsp;Berkeley College Common Room. The College Access Collaborative of Connecticut (CAC) is a community based educational consulting organization focused on improving college access, financial aid completion, and postsecondary readiness for first generation, multilingual, adult, and historically underserved students across Connecticut. CAC partners with high schools, adult education programs, nonprofits, and community organizations to provide hands on support with FAFSA completion, AACTUS guidance for undocumented and mixed status students, college applications, scholarship navigation, and enrollment planning. Services are delivered through workshops, small group sessions, and individualized advising, particularly during peak college and financial aid seasons when schools are often stretched beyond capacity. CAC’s work is designed to strengthen and extend existing counseling and outreach efforts, not replace them. What makes CAC distinct is its relationship centered and culturally responsive approach. Programming is offered in English, Haitian Creole, and Spanish, ensuring families who are often excluded from the college process due to language or system barriers can fully participate and make informed decisions.
