The Faxon Law New Haven Road Race is excited to celebrate its 49th anniversary this Labor Day, Monday, September 7, with 6,000 participants expected to take part in one of the region’s largest road racing events.
This year’s event will feature a half marathon, half marathon relay, 5K, Town Fair Tire Kids Fun Run, and the signature 20K race. The 20K will once again host the USATF 20K National Championship, bringing elite runners from across the country to New Haven.
The 2026 race marks the 35th consecutive year that a national championship has been held in New Haven, making it the longest-running USATF Championship event in the country. The 20K is expected to feature a strong elite field, including U.S. Olympians and multiple national champions. With 6,000 participants expected, this year’s event will have its largest field in more than a decade.
All races will start and finish on the historic New Haven Green, where participants and spectators can enjoy a variety of vendors and activities. East Rock Brewing Company, a nationally recognized brewery and local favorite, will also be on site serving beer.
Race packet pickup will take place Friday through Sunday of Labor Day weekend at Corsair, a luxury apartment building in New Haven’s East Rock neighborhood.
The event will also offer plenty of activities for families. The Kids Fun Zone on the New Haven Green will feature games, sports mascots, and other outdoor entertainment to keep children engaged throughout the morning.
Continuing its commitment to sustainability, the 2026 Faxon Law New Haven Road Race will uphold its green initiatives in partnership with Avangrid. Race materials and packet bags will be printed on 100% recycled paper, while race shirts will be made from recycled fabrics. The event will use biodegradable cups and trash bags, eliminate plastic water bottles entirely, and feature electric or low-emission lead vehicles to further reduce its environmental impact.
Following the race, participants are invited to celebrate at the BAR New Haven After Party. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., runners can enjoy two slices of pizza and a beer for $14, with beer available to those 21 and older. Attendees under 21 must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are limited and selling quickly.
Faxon Law Group, the event’s title sponsor since 2007, continues to play a central role in the race’s mission.

6,000 Participants Expected at Faxon Law New Haven Labor Day Road Race

The Faxon Law New Haven Road Race is excited to celebrate its 49th anniversary this Labor Day, Monday, September 7, while continuing to honor the memory and legacy of longtime announcer Mark Gilhuly. 
Known as the “Voice” of Connecticut road races, Gilhuly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2024. His wife, Linda Kowalski, will carry on his tradition of welcoming approximately 6,000 runners competing in this year’s race at the starting line.
“Mark was the voice of positivity, kindness and passion as he loved people and life,” Linda said. “We now have the opportunity to use our collective voices to bring focus to the need to help patients and their families who are devastated by this disease.”
Last year, Kowalski spearheaded passage of legislation on pancreatic cancer at the Connecticut legislature in honor of Mark.
While you may not have been able to pick Mark out of a crowd, runners throughout Connecticut could recognize his voice anywhere. Mark announced hundreds of races, including more than 30 Faxon Law New Haven Labor Day Road Races. His upbeat personality and enthusiasm energized crowds at the starting line, but it was his ability to connect with runners that made him so special.
Known as the “Voice of Summer,” Mark had a special way of making every runner feel like they mattered. With his quick wit, familiar voice and words of encouragement, he became a beloved part of race day for generations of Connecticut runners. He knew many runners by name and would often share a fun fact, offer a few words of encouragement or find just the right thing to say as they approached the finish line.
For some runners, those words became a defining moment in their race. More than a few would seek Mark out after crossing the finish line just to tell him how his encouragement helped them dig a little deeper, find another gear and make that final push. Mark did more than announce races. He made people feel seen, supported and celebrated.
That connection came naturally to Mark, who was a passionate athlete himself. He was an avid cyclist, swimmer, runner and golfer. He participated in countless races throughout his life, completing 24 marathons, more than 50 triathlons and an Ironman Triathlon. He won the inaugural Greenwich Triathlon and directed the Milford Triathlon for many years.
In May 2024, as Mark continued his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, he was honored with the John Bysiewicz Award, presented to an outstanding individual who demonstrates courage and determination in the face of adversity and serves as an inspiration to others. Even while facing his own illness, Mark continued to inspire those around him, helping raise thousands of dollars for pancreatic cancer research and support.
He passed away in September 2024, but the voice that encouraged so many runners continues to echo throughout the Connecticut running community.
“The race is about friends and families achieving their goals, having fun, community and raising funds for good causes and community,” Kowalski said.
Kowalski has spent the better part of her life working in government relations to advocate for many policies, including those that support our healthcare system, medical professionals and the patients they serve. In the 2025 legislative session at the Connecticut General Assembly, Kowalski convinced the legislators to include nearly $300 000 in the budget to increase outreach and public education efforts on the need for early detection of the disease. She continues to raise funds for research initiatives.
At this year’s Faxon Law New Haven Road Race, Mark’s presence will be felt in a place where he spent so many Labor Day mornings: at the starting line, surrounded by runners he encouraged, families he welcomed and a community that loved him. His voice may be missed, but the joy, encouragement, passion and connection he brought to race day will remain a lasting part of the event.

Long Time Announcer Honored At Next Week’s Faxon Law New Haven Road Race

The Faxon Law New Haven Road Race is excited to celebrate its 49th anniversary this Labor Day, Monday, September 7. The event again features a half marathon, half marathon relay, 5K, the Town Fair Tire Kids Fun Run, and its signature 20K race. The 20K hosts the USATF 20K National Championship, attracting elite runners from around the country.
This year marks the 35th consecutive year a national championship race has been held in New Haven, making it the longest-running USATF Championship event in the country. The 20K is expected to feature a strong field, including U.S. Olympians and national champions. With over 1,400 runners already registered and a cap of 5,500 participants, the event is on track to sell out again. Runners are strongly encouraged to sign up early to secure their spot.
All races start and finish on the historic New Haven Green, where spectators and participants will enjoy a variety of vendors, including beer poured by a nationally recognized and local favorite, East Rock Brewing Company.
Race packet pickup will be held Friday through Sunday of Labor Day weekend at Corsair, a luxury apartment building located in New Haven’s East Rock neighborhood.

The Faxon Law New Haven Road Race is going to have their greenest event yet! The 2026 Green Initiative, sponsored by Avangrid and subsidiaries United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), and Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), strives to make the Labor Day Road Race more environmentally conscious and reduce the event’s carbon footprint. This year’s event will take the following environmentally conscious steps; 
- 100% compostable cups for water and eliminating single-use plastic water bottles.
- Using compostable napkins, spoons and hot dog wrappers.
- 5 stations on race site will sort event waste into compost, recycle &amp; landfill.
- Compostable wooden taster spoons used for frozen yogurt. 
- Use of a hybrid or electric lead vehicle.
- Recycled paper bags for packet pick-up.
- Collecting lightly used shoes (running shoes, casual shoes, dress shoes) that will be sent to Africa. 
- Leftover food will be picked up by local organizations that feed those in need.
- Paper used at event will contain recycled or partially recycled materials.
- No paper entries used with electronic race-day registration.- Participants encouraged to register online on their phones on race weekend.

With the help of supervision from The Rockfall Foundation, New Haven Climate Movement and support from Peels &amp; Wheels Composting, this year’s race will compost water cups, napkins, spoons, hot dog wrappers and uneaten food. The City of New Haven Parks and Public Works Department is helping recycle plastic beer &amp; yogurt cups, cans, plastic bottles and cardboard.

The Faxon Law New Haven Road Race takes place on Labor Day, Monday, September 7 on the New Haven Green. The event includes a half marathon, half marathon relay, 5K, Town Fair Tire kids fun run, and the 20K USATF National Championship. 
This year’s Labor Day event begins with the Kids Run at 8:10 a.m. and is followed by the half marathon, 20K, 5K and half marathon relay at 8:30 a.m. A crowd of 6,000 runners is expected to participate in the event.

Tim Eriksen is a highly regarded singer of American folksong and shapenote music, a songwriter whose work has been covered by Alison Krauss, Joan Baez, and Bonny "Prince" Billy and a multi-instrumentalist with a background in punk rock and South Indian classical music.
With Absence and her sister, a new project with longtime collaborator Peter Irvine, percussion and voice, the duo return to their roots in folk minimalism and Gothic Americana- new and ancient songs of their native New England informed by the wide palette of their other collaborations.
The two are probably best known for their musical contributions to films including the Oscar-winning Cold Mountain and cult horror phenomenon The Outwaters, and as founding members of the anomalous folk-noise outfit Cordelia’s Dad, "the only band to have performed with both Doc Watson and Nirvana." But while echoes of punk-folk and shapenote music abound on Absence and her sister, so does the dissonance and rhythmic complexity of their Bosnian band Žabe I Babe, the deep groove they picked up from collaborators like banjo master Dwight Diller and East African gospel singers the Naamaara sisters, and the love of experimentation and power of repetition celebrated in Terry Riley's In C, the first piece the two ever played together as teenagers. The album also abounds with echoes from Pumpkintown, the duo's New England magic lantern show with painter/projectionist Susan Brearey, named for the birthplace of both Absence Wing and her twin. The place may be imaginary, but the musicians know its sunlit meadows and dark secrets well.$25 general

To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Connecticut author Jackson Kuhl will give a presentation about Revolutionary War hero Samuel Smedley at the Hagaman Memorial Library on Thursday, September 10.
At the outbreak of war between Great Britain and the American colonies in 1775, Connecticut established its own state navy “for the Defence of the sea-coasts.” This fleet was separate from the Continental navy, which was authorized and overseen by the Continental Congress.
At the age of 23, Samuel Smedley of Fairfield was commissioned as a lieutenant of marines onboard the Connecticut navy flagship Defence. Less than a year later he was her captain, scouring the seas for British prey.
Smedley captured prizes, battled British ships in Boston Harbor and privateers off the coast of South Carolina, survived smallpox, a devastating shipwreck, was captured twice and escaped from an English prison, only to lose everything he owned.
Jackson Kuhl is the author of Samuel Smedley, Connecticut Privateer, a biography of the Revolutionary War’s most daring sea captain. Kuhl is also the author of the acclaimed gothic mysteries The Island of Small Misfortunes and A Season of Whispers. He has worked as an editor, journalist, ghostwriter, and freelance writer. Kuhl teaches writing at Mitchell College and lives in coastal Connecticut.
Kuhl will discuss Smedley’s Revolutionary War adventures and sign copies of Samuel Smedley, Connecticut Privateer at the Hagaman Memorial Library on Thursday, September 10 at 6 pm. The library is located at 227 Main Street in East Haven, and no RSVP is required.

The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.

The Jay Medal Soirée will be held Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Jay Estate from 5:30-9:30pm. Cocktails, dinner, award ceremony and dancing. Cocktail Attire.
