Carbon-neutral: Tracey Energy Is Part of the Solution

Efforts to cut carbon footprints and impact climate change involve electrification. Heating oil can be part of the solution, too.

Tracey Energy Services, Inc., a family-owned heating oil company with a 90-year history serving homeowners in greater New Haven, is already quadrupling the state’s recently mandated levels for the use of environmentally responsible biodiesel and speaking out about heating oil’s role in impacting carbon emissions.

“Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York recently passed standards for lower-carbon home heating oil, with Connecticut setting renewable diesel, known as biodiesel, blending standards at 5% target levels by July, 2020,” explained Ralph Carlo, who co-owns Tracey Energy with his wife, Jennifer Tracey Carlo. “Tracey Energy has already exceeded that level with 20% Biofuel® blends in our heating oil, and we’re committed to reaching a 50% blend by 2030, with our goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050.”

Carlo said Biofuel® fuel oil is domestically produced using renewable oil sources like cooking oils, requires no new equipment for homeowners, and burns cleaner for increased efficiency and immediate carbon reductions.

Legislation Focused on “Electrification”: Impact on NE Homeowners Significant

“More than ever, legislation and discussions are focusing on becoming more environmentally responsible to counteract the effects of climate change,” Carlo said. “State and federal policy makers are talking about phasing out carbon-intensive fuels, like traditional home heating oil. This would affect the predominantly family-owned heating oil businesses and homeowners specifically in the Northeast, most of whom use oil to heat their homes.”

This movement is referred to as “electrification” and homeowners currently using heating oil would be faced with new equipment costs, new relationships with large utility companies, and, according to Carlo, a less-reliable heating source. “Legislators aren’t seeing the heating oil industry’s efforts as part of the solution,” Carlo said.

Family-owned oil companies and farmers are changing the narrative

A coalition of America’s heating oil dealers in the Northeast and farmers in the Midwest have formed Project Carbon Freedom, dedicated to working to advance clean energy legislation. Project Carbon Freedom promotes Bioheat® renewable liquid heating fuel to significantly cut down on carbon emissions. Bioheat® heating oil is an ultra-low sulfur heating oil and the most sustainable residential heat source available on the planet.
