Updated: CTtransit Bus Ticket Kiosk Moves From New Haven Green To Church Street

Bus ticket booth on the Green was shuttered Saturday. Some question if the new location is ADA complaint. Patch asked the state about that.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Saying the new location will offer "a more convenient experience for purchasing passes and obtaining transit information," the state Department of Transportation has shuttered the CTtransit bus hub and ticket booth on Chapel Street at the New Haven Green and moved to 72 Church St.

"A new and improved CTtransit Sales Outlet is coming soon to 72 Church Street. Our current Sales Outlet at the New Haven Green will be closing permanently on Saturday, January 3, 2026," CTtransit posted to Facebook.

On the CT DOT website, it's noted that the "new Sales Outlet will open on Monday, January 5, offering a more convenient experience for purchasing passes and obtaining transit information."

As reported by the New Haven Independent, the DOT said the new spot "supports our goals of strengthening public-facing transportation services and reflects our ongoing investment in service quality and community connection."

It noted that the state transportation department, which owns the public bus system, said the location will be staffed and provide “in-person customer assistance, call center operations, and lost-and-found services.”

Hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday, state and city officials gathered for a ribbon cutting and news briefing on the move from where buses meet to a spot down the street for ticket sales.

"The new customer service center delivers a modern, centralized, and accessible location designed to improve the customer experience," the CT DOT noted in a news release.

On hand were CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto, CTtransit General Manager Thomas Stringer Jr., New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, State Representative Steven Winter, and other state and local "partners."

While Stringer was speaking at the briefing, which was soon cut short, a person shouted several times that the state and city is "violating federal law," referring to the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Elicker pointed to the person and said he'd be "happy to chat" after the briefing.

The video has since been removed from Facebook.

By late afternoon, a state response came via email to address a Patch question about the ADA question. This is its statement:

"The facility is an important part of the New Haven community, making it easier for people to get the in-person support they need, such as accessing lost and found and purchasing bus passes. The kiosk on the Green was not safe and secure for CTtransit staff – and this new location on Church Street will help us consolidate customer service functions and reduce wait times. Accommodations are available so all passengers are able to be served at this new location, just as they were at the Green's kiosk.

While we are able to open CTtransit’s New Haven Customer Service and Sales Outlet to the public today, there’s still work being done to provide the best service possible to all our customers."
