Dad Injured After Rushing To Save Daughter From Traffic: NHPD

The girl sustained serious injuries.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 32-year-old father was injured as he tried to prevent his 5-year-old daughter from running into traffic May 5, according to police.

David Pena, 32, told police he was across Bright Street from his daughter when he saw her begin to cross the street between two parked SUVs, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

Witnesses told officers that Pena grabbed his daughter and both were run over and dragged by the Pontiac.

His daughter was alert and conscious when she was taken to the Yale-New Haven Pediatric Hospital. She was originally listed in critical condition, but her condition has since improved and she is expected to recover. Pena sustained non-life threatening injuries to both of his arms and his face.

Police continue to investigate the crash and the driver hasn't been charged as of May 7. The investigation into the crash will take some time to complete, Hartman said.
