E-Scooter Fire In Yale Robotics Lab Draws Emergency Response, Streets Shuttered, No Injuries: NHFD

At around 8:50 a.m., firefighters were called to a fire with "heavy smoke" inside the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science building.

NEW HAVEN, CT — An e-scooter caught fire in a robotics lab inside the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science building at 17 Hillhouse Ave. on Thursday morning, according to New Haven Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin.

Coughlin said fire crews responded at 8:51 a.m. to the robotics lab for an activated fire alarm.

Coughlin said crews arrived on scene to "heavy smoke from the lab and quickly upgraded the response."

The fire chief said firefighters found an e-scooter on fire that "extended into the desk and computer it was under."

There were no injuries, the fire chief said. As of 10:30 a.m., firefighters were "still on scene ventilating smoke from the building."

At 9:40 a.m., Yale issued an alert noting that "Police are responding to an incident in the area of 17 Hillhouse Ave.," and advised students and staff to "avoid the area."

Street closures included Trumbull Street from Prospect Street to Temple Street and Hillhouse Avenue from Grove Street to Trumbull Street.
