Driver Chases, Attacks Other Driver, Fires Gun Following Crash, New Haven Police Say

A man faces a slew of charges after the car crash led to a shooting, assault and robbery, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Police said around 7 a.m. Saturday officers responded to a two-car collision at Elm Street and Sherman Avenue where one driver chased, attacked the other driver and fired shots, according to New Haven police.

Police said that two vehicles were involved in a collision in that intersection at around 7:15 a.m. And, according to the victim, police said the other driver, Jerryed Burgess, 38, of New Haven "got out of his car holding a handgun and began chasing him so he ran."

When the driver who had been chased returned to the vehicle, "Burgess saw him and attacked him," police said.

Another man arrived after the collision and was also armed with a handgun and struck the victim several times with his fist and took the driver's car keys and phone, police said. Police said that both Burgess and the other man "fired their respective guns during the encounter, but no one was struck."

The second man, who came to the scene after the collision, "presumably left with both firearms as none were located at the scene," police posted to the social media platform "X."

Burgess was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree robbery, first-degree criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, second-degree assault, unlawful discharge of a weapon, weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree breach of peace and traffic related violations.

He was taken into custody and held in lieu of $750,000 bail.
