Fatal DUI Crash Leads to Charges: New Haven PD

A witness followed a fleeing vehicle from the scene, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A local man was charged with DUI and manslaughter following a fatal motor vehicle crash June 21, according to police.

A motorcycle occupied by Diane Benedetto, 59, of North Haven and Jack Benedetto, 60, of New Haven was hit by a car at Chapel and East Streets, said Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

The car fled the scene, but was followed by a witness.

Both Benedettos were taken to the hospital and Diana passed away.

"At the scene, a witness told police the offending car’s driver had fled, driving to a nearby scrap yard, where he abandoned it and walked away. Officers located the car," Hartman said. "Its damage was consistent with the crash being investigated."

The witness described the suspect, who was found shortly after covered in vomit, Hartman said. An 18-pack of Modelo beer was found in the vehicle and cans were opened and empty.

Carlos Perez, 32, of Atwater Street lied to police about his name and said the car was his, but he wasn't driving. Later he said he was the lone occupant of the car, but he wasn't driving, Hartman said.

Perez was charged with DUI, second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, evading responsibility and motor vehicle charges.

Additional charges are possible pending a complete investigation. Court records indicate bond was set at $100,000 and he wasn't released from custody.
