Feds Charge 19-Year-Old With 2 'Gunpoint Robberies' Of New Haven Biz

NEW HAVEN, CT — The Justice Department alleges that Jermaine Cannon, 19, robbed one New Haven business at gunpoint on two occasions, one day after another, in Nov. 2021.
A federal grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging Cannon with two counts of "interference with commerce by robbery," and two counts of "brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence." If convicted, he faces potential decades in prison.
The indictment alleges that on Nov. 10, 2021, and again on Nov. 11, 2021, Cannon, brandishing a firearm, robbed Howard Mini Mart & Deli, on Howard Avenue, according to Vanessa Roberts Avery, US Attorney for Connecticut.

In jail since his arrest on state charges in November 2021, Cannon pleaded not guilty, per the US Attorney.
Court records show that those state charges include dozens of felony and misdemeanor charges from 2021 including burglary, larceny, criminal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a large capacity magazine, assault, unlawful restraint, threatening, violating a protective order, and risk of injury to a child among them, all alleged by New Haven police.

Cannon is being held by the state Department of Corrections at Manson Youth Institution on a near-$400,000 bond, but also has a federal detainer.
