NEW HAVEN, CT — A firefighter is in stable condition after being struck by gunfire while off-duty near his home, according to The New Haven Register. Emergency responders treated the 28-year-old victim at the scene, and he was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital.

The incident occurred at 7:15 p.m. Saturday on Shelton Avenue between Read Street and the Hamden town line near Goodrich Street, NBC CT reported. Investigators found evidence of gunfire on the road and sidewalk.

The victim remains hospitalized as of Sunday and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A fire official told The Register that the incident highlighted issues with the recent spike in gun violence across the city.
