NEW HAVEN, CT — New Haven firefighters rescued 11 people from a blaze inside a Chapel Street apartment building, Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin told Patch.
The fire department was called to the Winthrop Terrace Apartments, 1523 Chapel St., at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday. A fire in a third-floor apartment in the five-story building was visible from the street.
Coughlin said three people from the fourth floor were "trapped and needed immediate rescue," and an additional eight other tenants were rescued.

He added that the fire escapes on the large apartment building "were used with success."

Ultimately, a third-alarm fire, the cause is under investigation, the fire chief said.
Firefighters had the fire under control by 12:37 p.m.
Coughlin said the number of people displaced is "still being evaluated."
