NEW HAVEN, CT —First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona will visit Albertus Magnus College in New Haven Wednesday. They will arrive at Tweed New Haven Airport in the early afternoon.

Biden and Cardona will visit the private college's Horizons summer learning program held for New Haven public elementary school students. Gov. Ned Lamont noted that he'd be joining Biden and Cardona.

The programs are designed to help kids who "fell behind during the pandemic catch up on reading, writing and arithmetic before the new school year begins," according to the AP.

It's also expected Biden and Cardona will shine a light on educational programs funded through the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, the AP reported. Around $122 billion of ARPA funding was earmarked to "help schools safely reopen and stay open during the pandemic, and address students’ academic and mental health needs."

Nonprofit Horizons National, whose mission is to "advance educational equity by building long-term partnerships with students, families, communities, and schools to create experiences outside of school that inspire the joy of learning," offers summer learning programs in 20 states.
