Goals This Weekend? Check Out NHPD Vs. NHFD Chiefs’ Cup Hockey Games

The 27th Annual friendly hockey competition between the two departments raises money for police officers, firefighters injured on the job.

NEW HAVEN, CT – This weekend on Friday, April 5th and Saturday, April 6th at Ralph Walker Ice Rink, the New Haven Police Department and the New Haven Fire Department will compete in the Chiefs’ Cup Hockey Games, the 27th annual friendly hockey competition between the two departments that raises money for New Haven police officers and fire fighters who are injured on the job.

The opening ceremony of the Chief’s Cup “A Game” hockey match will be on Saturday, April 6th at 12 noon. At the opening ceremony of the “A Game,” Sergeant Paul Finch will be honored as the New Haven Police Officer of the Year and Fight Fighter Marc Giannelli will be honored as the New Haven Fire Fighter of the Year. The ceremonial puck drop will be performed by this year’s beneficiary, Officer Jonathan Faya-Sanchez. The Retiree Game and Elm City Cup “B Game” will be played on Friday, April 5th, beginning at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

Tickets are $20 per person, which buys access to all three games, and admission for kids is free. After the games, there will be live music, food, and beverages. After the Saturday game, there is also a free public skate.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, and state Senate President Martin Looney will give remarks at the opening ceremony of the Chiefs’ Cup game.

To date, the Police Department hockey team has won 15 games, and the Fire Department hockey team has won 10 games, and there was a two-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.
