Elmer Alvarez returned a lost check not expecting any award. He now won't be homeless for the holidays.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A homeless man who returned a lost $10,000 check got an unexpected award a day before Thanksgiving. Elmer Alvarez found the check and returned it to Roberta Hoskie, who herself was homeless at one point in her life.

Alvarez's rent will be paid for the next six months, he was offered classes to become fluent in English and Hoskie also offered him a full scholarship to her Outreach School of Real Estate, according to WTNH.

Alvarez said he returned the check without expecting anything in return. He thanked Hoskie for giving him a push in the right direction.
