Homicide Victim Attended New Haven Academy; School System Offers Ongoing Support For Students
New Haven police are asking for tips after the Monday shooting left two young men dead.
NEW HAVEN, CT — New Haven Academy is offering support to the school community after one of its students was fatally shot earlier this week.
Two people were killed in the shooting on Monday, including Malakai Caraballo, 18, of New Haven, who attended New Haven Academy, and Jayden Martinez, 20, of Ansonia.
New Haven Academy Principal Greg Baldwin issued a statement to the school community this week.

“Our hearts go out to his family in this difficult time,” Baldwin said. “We are so sorry for his loss. We will miss the young man’s smile and his quick wit. Even though he only spent a brief time with us here at NHA, he made an impression.”
The school year finished for the summer this week. Officials offered support while school was still in session and beyond.

“We know that the year is ending,” Baldwin wrote. “If you need support … please reach out. We will do our best to support you throughout the weeks ahead.”
New Haven police said they were dispatched to the Fort Hale Gardens apartment complex, at 24 Woodward Ave., on a report of a shooting on June 22 around 1:24 p.m.
Officers located a personal vehicle with victims inside leaving the area, and they met the occupants at the emergency department at Yale New Haven Hospital.
That vehicle had two male gunshot victims, the Ansonia resident who later succumbed to his injuries, and a 24-year-old Waterbury resident whose injuries were non-life-threatening, police said. A third male who was in the car was not hurt, according to police.
A short time later, a third gunshot victim, Caraballo, was dropped off at the Smilow Cancer Hospital, also by personal vehicle, but he succumbed to his injuries too, police said.
Police found ballistic evidence on Woodward Avenue.
“Based on the initial investigation, it appears that there were two separate groups of men involved who knew each other and the shootings were not a random act,” police said, in a news release.
Police have asked any witnesses, or anyone with information, to call detectives at 203-946-6304 or through the department's anonymous tip-line at 866-888-TIPS (8477).
As of mid-day Friday, no arrests had been made.
